Chapter Two

I’m not generally thought of as insane, but today, I woke up feeling a little crazy. My nerves felt like I had stuck my finger up a light-socket, but a little less extreme.
Getting out of his bed or whatever you would call it, Merrick’s senses were screaming a warning about the impending doom of today.
Today he actually wanted to go to school, and it was the first time in a while that he had felt such a need to go to the place that he had dreaded since his younger years. Merrick was a very bright student but no one talked to him since he wore dark sunglasses and a full outfit of black to every day of school that he actually chose to attend.
Merrick was fully dressed as he solemnly sprinted down the steps as quiet as possible to avoid the attention of his father, a very light sleeper and one who he knew, though he wasn’t sure from where, disapproved of any visits to his house. If it even could be called a visit… He wasn’t even supposed to be in this house, or in the house that he was heading to.
The outside of her house looked plain and boring, so unlike the occupant he watched every night. She was very interesting and talked fast, with excitement. He couldn’t remember the last time he had been excited about anything…. He’d been watching her for a while.
Slinking quietly, as usual, to the same spot as usual, he quietly watched over the sleeping form. He’d been drawn to this particular person for years on end- but she could never know.
He wasn’t quite sure who she was. One day he remembered a random house and went to see who lived in it. He could tell that he should remember the fascinating girl inside of it, but he didn’t know why. Those memories were all sealed away for some reason, and most remained hidden away and out of his reach.
He watched her for a while as she tossed and turned. These moments when he sat in that room were the best times for him to think. They were both seniors in high school, and he often wondered about his, and sometimes her, future plans. So far he had nothing, and he had never spoken to her enough to know what she had in mind.
When he was done thinking, about the time she started to awake from her dream, he turned and silently left the room to sit in front of the door. Outside, he became momentarily frustrated with himself and sank to floor without a sound, dropping his head into his hands.
He had only been there for a few minutes when he sat straight up in a sudden movement. Unfortunately, he heard sluggish footsteps an hour earlier than normal. He didn’t know what would happen if he was discovered, but it wouldn’t be good.
He managed to leap across the hall just as the bedroom door opened with a creak. Cursing himself, he darted down the stairs a moment too late. As much as he’d tried to avoid it, he’d been seen.

Pulling on her favorite pair of jeans and a tight-fitting green sweater, Luna stepped out of the steamy haven and into the now-chilly hallway.
“Breakfast for those awake, now being served!” A deep voice split through the silence. That was Luna’s father, an average sized man with eyes a shade of green like grass and fair blond hair- the complete opposite of Luna herself.
Rushing down the stairs two at a time, Luna clung to the idea that she might actually get to eat breakfast, but as her eyes scanned the table, she noticed nothing left of the mad rush from her mother and two younger brothers, Mark and Jacob.
“There’s never anything for me.” She stated as she dug through the cabinet. It wasn’t a question; this was how it was every morning when you had a father that despised your every existing moment. The cabinet was bare, so Luna was obviously going hungry for yet another morning.
He ignored her every day of her life. Feeling the shame that she couldn’t even make her dad proud or even make him happy that she was alive, Luna hastily grabbed what meager supplies she owned for her senior year of classes and rushed out of the pale, green-painted oak door.
